Welche Harry Potter Teile haben eine Extended Version?

Die "Harry Potter"-Filme haben fast alle Überlänge. Dabei sind sie eigentlich für Kinder gedacht. Ausgerechnet der allererste und kindlichste Film, "Der Stein der Weisen" wäre ursprünglich aber noch länger gewesen. Der Macher findet: Was nicht ist, kann ja noch werden.

20 Jahre ist es her, dass "Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen" eine der größten Filmreihen aller Zeiten lostrat. Die erste Verfilmung der Romane von J.K. Rowling war ein gewaltiger Erfolg. Zu verdanken ist das im Wesentlichen dem Regisseur Chris Columbus, der zuvor bereits Klassiker wie "Kevin – Allein zu Haus" und "Mrs. Doubtfire" gedreht hatte. Ihm gelang das Unmögliche, als er Rowlings detailliertes Kinderbuch in 152 Minuten Film presste.

Wäre es nach Columbus gegangen, wäre der Film aber noch länger geworden. Im Gespräch mit den Kollegen von The Wrap erzählt er, seine ursprüngliche Version hätte eine Länge von drei Stunden gehabt. Zwar gibt es von "Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen" schon eine verlängerte Fassung auf DVD und Blu-ray, allerdings geht auch diese "nur" 157 Minuten. Folglich gibt es noch 23 Minuten, die nie in einer fertigen Fassung zu sehen waren.

Die Eltern fanden ihn zu lang, die Kinder fanden ihn zu kurz

Columbus musste den Film damals kürzen, weil das Studio sich mit der Länge seiner Fassung unwohl fühlte. Er selbst fand den Film in der drei Stunden Version allerdings perfekt und hatte keine Bedenken damit, obwohl der Film für Kinder gedacht war, wie er erklärt: "Wir wussten, dass der Film funktioniert, weil wir ein paar Vorschauen gemacht haben – insbesondere eine Vorpremiere in Chicago, bei der unsere erste Version drei Stunden lang war. Die Eltern sagten hinterher, er sei zu lang, die Kinder sagten, er sei zu kurz. Ich dachte mir, naja, die Kinder haben vermutlich eine kürzere Aufmerksamkeitsspanne, also ist das eine gute Sache."

Was ist Fans in den geschnittenen Szenen entgangen?

In dem Interview geht Columbus sehr offen damit um, was er aus der "Stein der Weisen"-Verfilmung entfernte: "Wir müssen Peeves wieder in den Film einbauen", so der Regisseur. Peeves der Poltergeist ist eine Figur, die in allen sieben "Harry Potter"-Romanen auftritt, aber in keinem der Filme je zu sehen war. Rik Mayall wurde damals für die Rolle besetzt und drehte viele Szenen für den ersten Potter-Film, aber all seine Momente wurden entfernt – obwohl er laut vielen Aussagen ehemaliger Crew-Mitglieder des Films hervorragend war und alle durchgehend mit seiner Performance zum Lachen brachte.

Columbus und Potter: Never ending story?

Chris Columbus inszenierte noch den zweiten Potter-Film "Harry Potter und die Kammer des Schreckens", stieg aber später aus der Reihe aus, um mehr Zeit für seine Familie zu haben. Mittlerweile wäre er für eine Potter-Rückkehr offen. Nicht nur wünscht er sich eine Veröffentlichung seiner Mega-Version von Teil 1, sondern auch einen neuen Film mit der Originalbesetzung – basierend auf Rowlings Theaterstück "Harry Potter und das verwunschene Kind". Ob es dazu kommen wird, ist fraglich.

The best information that is out there regarding the extended edition to Harry Potter lies in the televised versions of the films. That’s right, the extended editions of the films are not widely available yet.

But wait.. There are still cuts of the film that have made it to physical media different from the theatrical version of the film. It’s time to really break down how to get the most out of your Harry Potter weekend binge.

Harry Potter Extra Scenes

Each film has come with some extra scenes on the second disc of the film. But through some marketing and frankly distribution agreements that we can not confirm, these special cuts for the most part have only been on a televised version of the film.

For me the most evident versions of this come in the Chamber of Secrets and the Goblet of Fire. The most memorable scene from the chamber of secrets have kids whispering about how they believe that Harry was a threat to Voldemort and that there could only be one dark lord.

In the Goblet of Fire, we see a scene where the entire Hogwarts students sing the school anthem as their response to the durmstrang and beauxbatons entrance to the school for the tri wizard cup.

These scenes often times only exist on televised versions of the films with the scenes actually being available out of the film itself in the deleted scenes sections of the DVD’s and Blu rays.

But.. The story does not stop here.

Current Expanded Versions of Harry Potter

Currently the films are available in their expanded form. However the price may scary most people away for each film. In 2007 There was a series of releases starting with the first Harry Potter Movie: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. This was known as the Ultimate Edition.

The Ultimate Edition of the film was available on DvD and Blu Ray go for a premium online, and these films capture those extended and deleted scenes that we have all been looking for.

There are other big time series that have released extended editions over and over again. The biggest example being the Lord of the Rings Extended edition, a comparison that we have already done here.

But Harry Potter deserves a cut and dry easy to access version of the ultimate edition of Harry Potter. That was only being played with starting in 2007.

Harry Potter Ultimate Edition

Currently Harry Potter Ultimate edition is the closest thing that Potter fans have in regards to the extended edition version of the films. The Harry Potter Ultimate Edition adds in some of the deleted scenes from the original film. Usually these scenes are take them or leave them. But to any fan of Harry Potter are e welcomed addition to each film.

Though through televised versions of the film extended scenes are added in. The DVD and Blu Ray versions of the film only give it to you for the first 2 films. These films being Harry Potter and the Socerer’’s Stone Ultimate Edition and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Ultimate Edition. The rest of the ultimate edition versions of the films only have the special features deleted scenes available to watch.

Is There a Harry Potter Extended Edition Coming?

Even today, we still do not know if there will ever be an extended release of the Harry Potter Films. Even after the 20th anniversary. There as been no word on expanding the movies 3-8 on physical media. Though we would anticipate with the scenes being added in on television that these cuts are done and ready to release likely during a anniversary date celebration in the future.

Which Harry Potter Films Have Extra Scenes?

Currently to purchase, only Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Store and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets contain the baked in deleted scenes and can be purchased with these specific copies, or this version of the collectors edition. Note that the collectors edition does not contain the extended versions but do contain deleted scenes in their special editions.
