What is the most important reason for licensees to review the most recent version of the Kansas Real Estate License Law book?

The basic requirements to be eligible to obtain a real estate license in Kansas are:

You are at least 18 years of age.
You have a high school diploma or equivalent.
You have NOT been convicted of certain felonies within a specific timeframe.

The steps required to apply for licensure by the Kansas Real Estate Commission (KREC) are:

Complete a 30-hour Principles of Real Estate course from an accredited school and receive a completion certificate. This certificate is valid for 12 months and is required to take the Licensure Exam.
Pass each of two sections of the Licensure Exam. You will receive a score report for each part of the exam. These two reports are each valid for six months from the date you pass that section.
Submit to a KBI/FBI criminal background check. Your background check is valid for six months.
Complete the 30-hour Kansas Practice Course from an accredited school and receive a completion certificate. The Kansas Practice Course certificate is valid for 6 months.

30-Hour Principles of Real Estate Course

Home-Study Online Plus – $235

  • Upon registering for the course you will have access to the State and National study portion along with diagnostic exams and the final exams.
  • Two days before the Zoom webinar with the instructor, you will be emailed class details with a link to the webinar and a pdf of the State study portion.
  • Participate in a 2-hour optional Zoom, Kansas License Law Seminar from 8-10 am. (See dates below)
  • Participate in an 8-hour required Live, Exam Prep Seminar from 8 am-5 pm. (See dates below)
  • Complete the two-part, open-book online course exam and score at least 90% on each section. If your score is not 90%, you will get additional attempts to retake the exam.
  • Once you’ve achieved a 90% score, you can download and print your certificate. Your Principles of Real Estate certificate is valid for 12 months, which means you must pass the Licensure Exam within 12 months. You need to take a copy of this certificate with you when you take your Kansas Licensure exam at a Pearson VUE testing center.

Kansas Licensure Exam – $82  ($75 for a re-take exam, if necessary)

A Pearson VUE Real Estate Candidate Handbook containing information on scheduling the Exam and exam procedures will be included with your Principles of Real Estate materials. You can download the handbook here.

You must pass the Exam within 12 months of the date on your Principles of Real Estate certificate.

  • Make an appointment with Pearson VUE to take the Exam.
  • Pass the timed, closed-book exam with a score of at least 70% on each section (State and National) of the two-part exam.
  • Once you pass either the State or the National section of the exam, a score report will be issued for that portion of the exam.
  • If you passed both sections of the Exam your score reports are valid for six months. If you passed only one section of the State Exam you must pass the other section and complete the application process before the first score report expires. If you don’t complete your application process within this six-month time frame you will need to begin the process again.

KBI/FBI Criminal Background Check – $60

A fingerprint/background kit will be included with your Principles of Real Estate materials, you may request a kit from KREC, or you may pick one up at the Pearson VUE testing center when you take the Licensure Exam. Your criminal background check will be valid for six months.

30-Hour Kansas Practice Course – Online format – $160

  • This is the last course before applying for your license.
  • Upon purchasing the course you will have access to the course on OnlineEd.com.
  • Complete the open book, online exam with a passing score of 90% or above.
  • Once you pass the exam (achieve a score of at least 90%), you can download and print your certificate. A copy of this Practice Course certificate must be sent to KREC as part of your application. The certificate is valid for six months.

Apply for a License – License Application & License Fee – $140

  • After you pass the Licensing Exam you must *affiliate with a Broker and apply for your license with the KREC within six months of passing the exam (before any of your certificates expire).
  • Send the following to KREC:
    • Education Certificate you are issued when you complete the Principles of Real Estate course online exam
    • Two score reports Pearson VUE will give you when you pass the two sections of the State Exam
    • Copy of your Kansas Practice Course certificate
    • Submit your KBI/FBI criminal background check and $60 fee (if not already submitted) along with the $15 application fee, and your $125 license fee.

Affiliate with a Broker

Kansas requires that you work under the umbrella of a broker for a minimum of two years. You can proceed with all steps prior to submitting your application, but you need to be affiliated before you can apply for your license.
