Based on this book, translation, ''Let me tell you a story'', I got an impression that Jorge Bucay is trying to be South American guru of popular psychology. In this book, guru of Gestalt psychotherapy and philosophy. It was like he was trying to be bookish Sean Maguire from 'Good Will Hunting' but he failed. At least for me.

Jorge Bucay wrote this book in gestalt mannerism, meaning, Bucay is a real Argentinean psychotherapist and he wanted us, me, the reader to get in contact with myself, using autosuggestion as a tool. Which is of course basic thing of any self analysis, but I found his stories quite shallow and too general. Yes, all of his stories have one intention – using warm connotations, fables and parabolas, symbolism from ancient cultures, countries and religions ... rather than cold ''psycho'' expressions to approach masses – crowd.

Which is ok if your inner world is a land not yet discovered, and if you are disconnected with yourself and if you need instant help. Something soothing that will tell you, you are not alone. Which is again, something we all can relate to. Nobody wants to be psychologically special (this sounds dumb :), we all need to have and we want comrades during our crises.

I am not trying to diminish Bucay, but I heard so much about this book and now I'm really disappointed. He used many anecdotes and situations which everybody has in life – problems with work, partners, lovers, friends and family ... problems with our obligations, duties, what we want, what we need, what we have, and of course, how we deal emotionally and how we project these things outside - in comparison with what is happening inside of us. He used stories, rather that advices, to show us the way ''out''.

It just didn't work with me. It wasn’t deep enough, it was cute and charming. Maybe that's my problem. But to explain that I would have to start a sentence with, My dear diary...:)

if you're older than 15, enjoy the collection of stories in this book. that's all there is to it. all the author's attempts to analyze the stories, moralize, "guide" the character (and subsequently the reader) through deep understanding of human psychology, fail and just seem so superficial, already tried and unnecessary. had this been just a collection of stories, it would've been enough. it reminded me too much of coelho - shallow and not good quality writing. if you're older than 15, enjoy the collection of stories in this book. that's all there is to it. all the author's attempts to analyze the stories, moralize, "guide" the character (and subsequently the reader) through deep understanding of human psychology, fail and just seem so superficial, already tried and unnecessary. had this been just a collection of stories, it would've been enough. it reminded me too much of coelho - shallow and not good quality writing. ...more

I guess this is a self help book. The author is a gestalt psychotherapist, and he is one of two the main characters of this book, or that was my impression. The other is Demián, which is he is treating. His method is to tell Demián stories, and talk about things in relation to these stories.

To be quite honest, I didn't really connect that well with the self help aspect of this book, but this is an interesting collection of folktales, parables, and jokes from all over. There are pieces from Chris

Simple, enjoyable and poignant. Easy to remember because stories are easier to keep in mind than dry quotes and teachings.

I prolonged finishing this book because I liked it so much that I never wanted it to end. All of the stories were very interesting and taught me something new or gave me a new perspective on certain topics. This is not your typical self-help book, so I would definitely recommend it to anyone! ( I don't usually choose to read or like reading that genre of books but I fell in love with this one.) The book is formed by several short fictional stories that can trigger some interesting self-reflection. While not all of them will resonate with each of us, some might lead to observe personal situations from different perspective thanks to the freedom of exploration that is often facilitated with the fictional nature of the book.

I found the book extremely helpful and loved it both times I read it. It is easy to read, relaxing and in many cases awakening. All the stories are deeply educative and although they all have the same centre - a young student with everyday struggles - it is hard to think of someone that doesn't share (at least some of) Demian's concerns and that the stories wouldn't apply to him. Personally, I couldn't help the feeling that some stories were put there for me to provide answers to some personal internal questions. Thank you Mr. Bucay!

I would totally recommend it and am planning to re-read it in the future (after the necessary time to forget it again has passed)!

There are many good old wives' tales. Some of the stories are known from other sources and books. I like the way of narrating that every problem/situation has its way of solution which can be apparent and simultaneously it's reflecting in individual stories. :) There are many good old wives' tales. I will come back to this book in some time in my life, I just know it. This book is full of wisdom, neatly packaged into stories that are beeing told in therapy-sessions. The overarching story itself isn't really important, but it doesn't have to be. The main appeal of this book, to me at least, are the stories the therapist tells the narrator. They are about everything in life. Be it fear, happiness, expectations or Lies. I did not read this book carefull enough. I bet I missed the meaning of a lot of stories so I know that I will read this once in a while, even if It's just so I can re-read a story I loved.

The main premise of this book is true - that stories are a very important part of life, as well as an important part of psychotherapy - because stories make us understand and feel more than theory, they tend to stick with us, especially if they touch our own experiences and then expand them in some way - expanding our knowledge, our emotions, worldview, etc.

Short stories embedded in a series of therapy sessions and lighthearted conversations between a therapist and his patient - entertaining but with deep meaning hidden behind the short stories - taken from different cultures and religions.

This was my second time reading this book, with barely remembering having it read the first time. Therefore, not only would I recommend it to anyone seaking easy, yet stimulating read, but I also advise you to grab it every once in a while. Because, no matter how inspiring the stories are, there is a slight chance of you actually remembering all of them and putting them into actions.

I don't doubt Jorge Bucay has good intentions and really wants to help people. That's a great thing. I found this book to be too simplistic. It's okay for teenagers and youths that are just stepping into the real world and doing some self-reflecting.

For me personally, it leans in too much into the standard New Age tripe, where the world is just and "believing" is the key to success. It doesn't account for the fact that people don't have perfect control over every segment of life and that sudden

For me personally, it leans in too much into the standard New Age tripe, where the world is just and "believing" is the key to success. It doesn't account for the fact that people don't have perfect control over every segment of life and that sudden events, ups and downs happen. Also, I got the impression that the author compiled stories and tales that he found inspiring and then constructed a loose narrative around that. It felt a bit forced and Demian never felt like a real person to me. I guess it's good that he's a blend of the various clients Bucay has had over the years, because otherwise he is insufferable.
