What was the period of change in Japan during the late 19th century known as?

The modernization and westernization of Japan was ushered in through major political, economic and social change, which all occurred in a remarkable span of merely 50 years. The unfair treaties that Japan had signed with western nations was one driving force of the Meiji Restoration.

What were some of the changes made during the modernization of Japan?

Among other accomplishments, during the Meiji period Japan adopted a constitution and a parliamentary system, instituted universal education, built railroads and installed telegraph lines, and established strong army and navy forces.

What period in history did the Japanese modernize?

Early Meiji period (1868–77) In 1854, after US Navy Commodore Matthew C. Perry forced the signing of the Treaty of Kanagawa, Japanese elites took the position that they needed to modernize the state's military capacities, or risk further coercion from Western powers.

Why did Japan rapidly modernize in the late 1800s?

There were four main factors that Japan had in its favour that made modernization of the country faster. Japan's island geography, a centralised government, investment in education and a sense of nationalism were all factors that allowed Japan to modernize in under half a century.
