Test Code VENIP Performing Laboratory The CPT Codes provided in this document are based on AMA guidelines and are for informational purposes only. CPT coding is the sole responsibility of the billing party. Please direct any questions regarding coding to the payor being billed. Any Profile/panel component may be ordered separately. Reflex tests are performed at an additional charge. Why should butterfly needles be avoided?Because a needle is left in the arm rather than a catheter or PICC line for the purpose of an infusion, a butterfly needle can damage a vein if the unit is suddenly yanked. Even if the right size needle is used, the needle can become blocked during treatment if not correctly placed.
Why do we need to pull the plunger up and down before performing a venipuncture? If the plunger is pulled back too hard, hemolysis can occur. The force may pull the wall of the vein down on top of the bevel of the needle causing the blood flow to stop, or the needle may be inadvertently pulled out of the vein.
What is going to be the effect if the phlebotomist forcefully pushed down the plunger during transfer of blood from the syringe to the vacutainer tube?Use blood transfer device to fill tubes from syringe. Do not force blood into the tube by pushing the plunger; this can cause hemolysis and may disrupt the ratio of specimen to anticoagulant.
Why is it important to avoid a short draw when performing a venipuncture? This order of draw should be followed whenever multiple tubes are drawn during a single venipuncture. This is to prevent cross contamination by the tube additives that could lead to erroneous results.
