Ohio Real Estate License: Salesperson

Requirements to Obtain a Salesperson License:

      • Be at least 18 years old
      • Be honest, truthful and of good reputation
      • Be sponsored by an Ohio Broker
      • Not have been convicted of a felony or a crime of moral turpitude. See additional verbiage in state ruling here: https://www.com.ohio.gov/documents/real_RequirementsSalespersonLicense.pdf
      • Provide proof of a high school diploma or equivalent if born after 1950
      • Complete the following education requirements:
          • 40 hours – Real Estate Principles and Practices
          • 40 hours – Ohio Real Estate Law (including instruction in civil rights, housing discrimination and desegregation problems)
          • 20 Hours – Real Estate Appraisal
          • 20 hours – Real Estate Finance
      • Submit completed application with fees
      • Pass state and national exam

Salesperson Continuing Education:

      • Renewal periods are on licensees birthday occurring three years after the licensee’s date of initial licensure, and on or before the licensee’s birthday every 3 years thereafter.
      • Renewals are done online through Elicensing on or before due date
      • Licensees must complete 30 hours of education to include: 
          • 9 hours including instruction in Ohio Real Estate law; recently enacted state and federal laws affecting the real estate industry, municipal, state, and federal civil rights law; and cannon of ethics for the real estate industry as adopted by the commission
      • Pay any applicable fee

Ohio Real Estate License: Broker

Requirements to Obtain a Broker License:

      • Applicants must hold an active salesperson license for 2 of the last 5 years and comply with the following requirements: 
          • If licensed before 1/1/1972, no further education is required
          • If licensed after 1/1/1972 but before 1/03/1984, applicant must have taken the required 120 hours (courses 1-4 listed below)
          • If licensed after 1/3/1984 applicants must taken courses 1-8 listed below and possess a minimum of 2 year post-secondary education (#9) or the equivalent hours of 60 semesters or 90 quarter hours.
      • Education Requirements: 
          • Ohio Real Estate Law (40 hours)
          • Ohio Real Estate Principles & Practices (40 hours)
          • Real Estate Appraisal (20 hours)
          • Real Estate Finance (20 hours)
          • A Financial Management Course
          • A Human Resources or Personnel Management course
          • An Applied Business Economics course
          • A Business Law Course
          • A minimum of 2 years post-secondary education, or equivalent hours of 60 semesters or 90 quarter hours. Courses 5-8 may be included in your postsecondary education.
      • Experience Requirements:
          • The Division calculates the transactions to ensure the applicant meets the required amount.

How many hours does it take to become a real estate agent in Ohio?

On average, it takes between two (2) – three (3) months to get an Ohio real estate license depending on the pace in which you complete the 120 hours of pre-licensing courses, pass your licensing examinations, the time it takes you to complete the application process and application processing times.

How many hours of continuing education must Ohio licensees complete during every licensing period?

(B) Licensees must certify completing the thirty hours of continuing education on or before the licensee's date of birth three years after the licensee's date of initial licensure and every three years thereafter.

How many classroom hours of pre licensing education are required for someone to become a broker in Louisiana?

Real Estate 201 Classroom or Online: This course satisfies 90 of the 150 hours required by the Louisiana Legislature for an applicant for a Louisiana Real Estate Brokers License.
