Website

A website, or Web site, is not the same thing as a Web page. Though the two terms are often used interchangeably, they should not be. So what's the difference? To put it simply, a Web site is a collection of Web pages. For example, Amazon.com is a Web site, but there are millions of Web pages that make up the site. Knowing the difference between these two terms can save you a lot of embarrassment.

Web Page

Web pages are what make up the World Wide Web. These documents are written in HTML (hypertext markup language) and are translated by your Web browser. Web pages can either be static or dynamic. Static pages show the same content each time they are viewed. Dynamic pages have content that can change each time they are accessed

Home Page

A home page is a webpage that serves as the starting point of website. It is the default webpage that loads when you visit a web address that only contains a domain name. For example, visiting http://techterms.com will display the Tech Terms home page.

HTML

Stands for "Hypertext Markup Language." HTML is the language used to create webpages. "Hypertext" refers to the hyperlinks that an HTML page may contain. "Markup language" refers to the way tags are used to define the page layout and elements within the page.

Web Browser

web browser, or simply "browser," is an application used to access and view websites. Common web browsers include Microsoft Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Apple Safari.

Index

Index

An index is a list of data, such as group of files or database entries. It is typically saved in a plain text format that can be quickly scanned by a search algorithm.

Hexadecimal Value

Hexadecimal is a base-16 number system. It is a different method of representing numbers than the base-10 system we use in every day practice. In base-10, we count in multiples of 10 before adding another digit.

www

Stands for "World Wide Web." It is important to know that this is not a synonym for the Internet. The World Wide Web, or just "the Web," as ordinary people call it, is a subset of the Internet. The Web consists of pages that can be accessed using a Web browser. The Internet is the actual network of networks where all the information resides.

URL

Stands for "Uniform Resource Locator." A URL is the address of a specific webpage or file on the Internet. For example, the URL of the TechTerms website is "http://techterms.com." The address of this page is

Hyperlink

A hyperlink is a word, phrase, or image that you can click on to jump to a new document or a new section within the current document. Hyperlinks are found in nearly all Web pages, allowing users to click their way from page to page. Text hyperlinks are often blue and underlined, but don't have to be. When you move the cursor over a hyperlink, whether it is text or an image, the arrow should change to a small hand pointing at the link. When you click it, a new page or place in the current page will open.

Http

HTTP

Stands for "Hypertext Transfer Protocol." HTTP is the protocol used to transfer data over the web. It is part of the Internet protocol suite and defines commands and services used for transmitting webpage data.

Domain Name

A domain name is a unique name that identifies a website. For example, the domain name of the Tech Terms Computer Dictionary is "techterms.com." Each website has a domain name that serves as an address, which is used to access the website.

Background Image

for English Language Learners. : the part of a scene or picture that is farthest from the viewer : the part of a scene that is behind a main figure or object in a painting, photograph, etc.

Internal Link

is a type of hyperlink on a webpage to another page or resource, such as an image or document, on the same website or domain. Hyperlinks are considered either "external" or "internal" depending on their target or destination

External Link

are hyperlinks that point at (target) any domain other than the domain the link exists on (source). In layman's terms, if another website links to you, this is considered an external link to your site. Similarly, if you link out to another website, this is also considered an external link.

Broken Link

or dead link is a link on a web page that no longer works because the website is encountering one or more of the reasons below. An improper URL entered for the link by the website owner. The destination website removed the linked web page (causing what is known as a 404 error)

Search Engine

a program that searches for and identifies items in a database that correspond to keywords or characters specified by the user, used especially for finding particular sites on the World Wide Web.

Key Word

a word or concept of great significance

Animated GIF

An animated GIF is a GIF file that includes multiple images or "frames." These frames are played back in sequence when the file is opened or displayed in a web browser. The result is an animated clip or a short movie.

Animation

the technique of photographing successive drawings or positions of puppets or models to create an illusion of movement when the movie is shown as a sequence.

Banner Ad

is a form of advertising on the World Wide Web delivered by an ad server. This form of online advertising entails embedding an advertisement into a web page. It is intended to attract traffic to a website by linking to the website of the advertiser.

Check Box

(in a graphical display) a small box that, when selected by the user, shows that a particular feature has been enabled or a particular option chosen.

Drop Down Menu

also known as a drop-down menu, drop menu, pull-down list, picklist) is a graphical control element, similar to a list box, that allows the user to choose one value from a list. When a drop-down list is inactive, it displays a single value.

Error 404

message is a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) standard response code, in computer network communications, to indicate that the client was able to communicate with a given server, but the server could not find what was requested.

IP Address

a unique string of numbers separated by periods that identifies each computer using the Internet Protocol to communicate over a network.

On a compact disc (CD), music is coded in a pat- tern of tiny pits arranged in a track that spirals outward toward the rim of the disc. As the disc spins inside a CD player, the track is scanned at a constant $\it{linear}$ speed of $v=1.25$ m$/$s. Because the radius of the track varies as it spirals outward, the $\it{angular}$ speed of the disc must change as the $\mathrm{CD}$ is played. Let's see what angular acceleration is required to keep $v$ constant. The equation of a spiral is $r(\theta)=r_0+\beta \theta$, where $r_0$ is the radius of the spiral at $\theta=0$ and $\beta$ is a constant. On a CD, $r_0$ is the inner radius of the spiral track. If we take the rotation direction of the $\mathrm{CD}$ to be positive, $\beta$ must be positive so that $r$ increases as the disc turns and $\theta$ increases.\ ($c$) Use your expression for $\theta(t)$ to find the angular velocity $\omega_z$ and the angular acceleration $\alpha_z$ as functions of time. Is $\alpha_z$ constant?

What is the Internet protocol Web browsers use to request and display?

HTTP is a protocol for fetching resources such as HTML documents. It is the foundation of any data exchange on the Web and it is a client-server protocol, which means requests are initiated by the recipient, usually the Web browser.

What is the Internet protocol Web browsers use?

A web browser loads a webpage using various protocols: It uses the Domain Name System (DNS) protocol to convert a domain name into an IP address. It uses the HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) to request the webpage contents from that IP address.

Which protocol is used to connect to the Internet quizlet?

Correct Answer: (C) HTTP is the protocol for communicating with web servers and transferring web pages and other data back to a browser. Explanation: This choice is correct because HTTP is an application protocol used to transfer files over the Internet.

What are Internet protocols quizlet?

Internet Protocol - A set of rules for communicating over the internet. IP can also stand for intellectual property. A unique address for each computer device on a network. Internet Service Provider - needed in order to access the internet.
