Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is a challenging opportunity for a Registered Nurse with vaccination experience to work as part of a cohesive and highly productive team in a large County Health Department’s Immunization Program. Stationed at the Ringling site (Sarasota), but will act as a “float” and will be sent to North Port site to help cover staffing shortages (County car or mileage provided). The employee in this position functions at an advanced level of Community Health Nursing, providing the full spectrum of immunizations services across the life span, including Travelers’ Health and Refugee Health Services, within the scope of nursing practice, using established core standards, policies and procedures. 

  1. Provides direct nursing service for adults and children, in accordance with Centers for Disease Control (CDC), American Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), and Department of Health (DOH)-Sarasota guidelines, protocols, and clinical service parameters.
    1. Provides routine children’s and adult immunizations, as well as comprehensive travel vaccines and health counseling.
    2. Performs nursing assessments, particularly of clients’ vaccination needs and immediate response to receiving immunizations, ensuring continuity of care.
    3. Uses FL SHOTS immunization registry to verify clients’ immunization needs prior to discussing with client or drawing up vaccines.
    4. Enters vaccines into FL SHOTS in real time.
    5. Educates client and/or family members regarding immunizations, disease process and transmission. Provides appropriate literature, including most up to date Vaccine Information Statement (VIS).
    6. Keeps abreast of all CDC immunization updates, schedules and ACIP recommendations, as well as CDC recommendations for Overseas Travel. Educates clients accordingly.
    7. Maintains skills with client teaching about travel precautions, including use of malaria prophylaxis.
    8. Administers Tuberculin Skin Tests (TSTs) and interprets them with demonstrated expertise.  Records results in Health Management System (HMS).
    9. Provides superior customer service, keeping clients well-informed about vaccines being given, potential side effects, etc., as well as when to return for additional doses.
  1. Provides Refugee Health Services in accordance with current Refugee Health Program Guidelines under the guidance and direction of the Refugee Health Nursing Program Specialist.
    1. Initiates required lab work, performs all necessary screenings, conducts physical examinations (after completing credentialing process, within one month of hire), administers vaccinations, provides education and counseling, maintains appropriate documentation, all in accordance with Refugee Health Service Guidelines.
    2. Utilizes, as needed, appropriate language interpreter services, in a culturally competent manner.
    3. Keeps abreast of guidelines and regulations relating to Refugee Health.
  2. Acts to ensure the integrity and quality of the vaccine supply and assists with maintaining the inventory.
    1. Assists with daily vaccine counts, to maintain vaccine accountability excellence.
    2. Assists with recording and uploading data logger temps.
    3. Assists with rotating vaccine inventory and ensuring that stock is properly stored.
    4. Maintains clean, well-stocked work area.
  3. Miscellaneous Activities
    1. Attends team meetings, Epidemiology and Communicable Disease Control (ECDC) and DOH-Sarasota staff meetings, and participates in staff development activities as requested.
    2. Maintains client confidentiality in a manner consistent with Florida Statutes and DOH policy.
    3. Performs other related duties as assigned, with adjustable scheduling as required.
    4. Completes all minimum of 20 hrs. of continuing education annually, per agency policy, including all required annual training.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of nursing principles and techniques, particularly those related to administration of injections
  • Knowledge of CDC Travel Vaccine protocols strongly preferred
  • Outstanding customer service skills, including cultural competency, are a must
  • Skill with administering parenteral injections to all age groups
  • Skill with administration and interpretation of Tuberculin Skin Tests (TST)
  • Excellent assessment skills and ability to interpret CDC, ACIP guidelines and regulations
  • Ability to communicate effectively and courteously
  • Organizational skills
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships

Qualifications:

Minimum –

  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464 or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Florida Administrative Code 210-8.27 or possess a nursing multi-state license through the Nurse Licensure Compact
  • Associate degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university

Preferred –

  • Experience administering vaccines
  • Experience with FL SHOTS data entry and HMS
  • Fluency in Spanish
