The Federal Bureau of Investigation is the nation's foremost law enforcement agency and the one that deals with most criminal offsets that occur on a nationwide basis (rather than within in a singe
state). Many federal agencies have their own police forces that deal with offenses within those agencies' jurisdictions.
State law enforcement agencies typically consist of state police, state highway patrols (except for Hawaii), and, sometimes, a state investigative agency.
City and urban police departments, as well as county police forces police departments, as well as county (sheriff's offices), comprise local law enforcement. Much of local police work is especially concerned with
order maintenance and problem-solving, such as resolving disputes, finding missing persons and runaways, and dealing with small quality-of-life violations.
