Chapter 2 - Multicultural Therapeutic Communication
Culture - A way of life for a group of people; the behaviors, beliefs, values, and symbols that
they accept, generally without thinking about them, and that are passed along by communication
and imitation from one generation to the next.
Multicultural communication - The ability to effectively communicate with individuals
of other cultures while recognizing one’s own personal cultural biases and prejudices and putting
them aside.
Cultural differences that may impact communication:
Language
Dress
Non verbal cues
Body structure
3 important actions to promote multicultural communication :
1.Become knowledgeable and aware of the beliefs and values of different cultures
2.Recognize barriers of multicultural communication
3.Develop techniques that build and foster multicultural communication
The 8 barriers of therapeutic transcultural communication :
1.Lack of knowledge
2.Fear and distrust
3.Racism
4.Bias
Prejudice - Opinion or judgment that is formed before all of the facts are known
Ethnocentrism - The belief that one's culture and traditions are better than those of
another
1.Stereotyping
2.Health care rituals
3.Dialect
4.Differences in perceptions and expectations
Low -Context communication - Utilizes few environmental or cultural idioms to convey
an idea or concept, but relies mainly on explicit and highly detailed language.
High-Context communication - Involves great reliance on body language, reference to
objects in the environment, and culturally relevant phraseology to convey an idea.
